Baron George Hoyningen-Huene was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on September 4, 1900. His father was a Russian cavalry officer and his mother was an American Ambassador's daughter. Hoyningen-Huene was brought to England in 1917, and left there for Istanbul in British uniform in 1919 as an interpreter to General Briggs.
